MY NEW FILM!

Looking into Light was created for my Handmade Films Class with Luther Price. By far my favorite class of the semester. It was an on again, off again process of experimentation with new media. Very liberating to work with my hands for a change from all the computer generated stuff. 16mm and super 8 film became a kind of addiction more so than a hobby. It possesses a magic that doesn't quite exist with digital. Also, attending that class was akin to visiting an uncle on the weekends. It was such a privilege to have Luther as a teacher. Not only was he one of the most passionate individuals I have ever met, he would also bring in baked goods to class every week. I took a lot out of that class and will expect to keep working with film as a way to escape getting lost in the LED void of ones and zeros.

Purpose Driven Animation

This is my PSA for Animation IV with Steve Gentile. This thirty second clip was made with the intention of having commercial potential. However, Instead of trying create a mock advertisement or bringing public awareness to a topical issue, I decided to adapt an ancient buddhist proverb. Bending the assignment a bit, gave me the perfect opportunity to illustrate this short story that I had in mind for a couple years prior. It stands as a philosophical antidote for instant zen (as the title indicates, there is a collection of these, one of the most popular being "the sound of one hand clapping.") This took months to produce which became exhausting. The point being to make as clear as possible a message for a general audience to understand. It was a challenge but from the start I had a sense of where I was going. It also helped that during production I was reading David Mamet's On Directing Film, which was largely influential in his approach to making a film "readable" by telling a story through shots.

Digital Illustrations 2011

These postcards are from my Digital Illustration class with Lisa Kennedy. The class is helping me get a lot better at photoshop.

Farewell

My final for Intro to Film and Video with Soon Mi Yoo. I got really interested in cinematography during the time I made this. The work of Raoul Coutard, Christopher Doyle, Vittorio Storaro and photographer William Eggleston were heavily influential and a great discovery. Much appreciation to Soon Mi for exposing me to such great artists.

My New Film!

My Final for Animation III with Steven Subotnick. The goal of this piece was to develop a story using a single line of dialog, "mother hand me the axe." We had about 5 weeks to complete the minute long short including the sound track, title and credits. The animation was created by charcoal pencil on paper, photographed, edited in Photoshop, then composited in After effects.

16mm!

My first film using 16 mm Bolex. Edited entirely in camera. This was an adaptation of a Franz Kafka short story of the same name. This was assigned by Soon-Mi Yoo for Introduction to Film and Video.

ANIMATION!

This is a collage animation made for Steve Gentile's Animation II class. It was created entirely from found objects, magazines, and postcards that were cut out and rearranged on 4x5 notecards.

Another Fairly Recent Painting

Once again this is from my Color for Painting class with Stuart Diamond. The assignment was to reference the color palette of another source. This could have included paintings, photography, sculpture, etc. I decided to use a painting by Francis Bacon as my bases. Bacon's work was a huge surprise for me last year. I really respect not only his painting style but also his comments on art and life.

Purple Gorilla

This is a gorilla mask that was used for a still life in my Color For Painting class. Most of these were done through out October and November 2009. If I remember correctly these took roughly about an hour and a half or so each.

Abstraction

Doing still lives in class can be pretty grueling, especially after 3 hours of critiquing the homework. The one above I decided to just go abstract. I've never had much success with acrylics in the past but I felt pretty comfortable this time around. It helped to have a looser approach and just concentrate in getting the colors down. Hopefully in the near future I can do some more on a larger scale. As of late I've just been focusing on scanning in my work as a way to preserve them just in case they get lost (which happens from time to time). Pretty soon I will post some of my work with film and video which has been my primary focus. Now that summer is here, my access to school equipment is limited so perhaps I will make more drawings and/or paintings.
